DU FU - Drunk on Wine

Another poem about wine, yet  we feel his rare joyousness - it is spring - and its abundance is felt everywhere.  Yet, our poet's perennial problems with money is evident in the last line.  The beauty of the sunset and the simplicity of the landscape is universal.  Read how Du Fu constructs the scene in pure detail, just enough to allow us to see for ourselves.

    When sunset parallels my windowscreen

    River exhales quintessences of spring.

Sweet perfumes burst from gardens on the bank.

Smoke rises where boatmen roast a supper.

Quarreling sparrows scatter from their branches.

Above the porch swarms of insects whirl in air.

Celestial messengers come on sips of cloudy wine,

Slipping all my cares away to nothingness.
